Ghanaian defender Gideon Mensah has shared his perspective on the Black Stars' loss to Cape Verde in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The 25-year-old participated in the match where Ghana suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat against the Blue Sharks at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Sunday.
Criticism from Ghanaians has been directed towards the Black Stars, with some even advocating for certain players to be excluded in the upcoming game. Speaking to reporters after the Cape Verde match, Mensah acknowledged the pressure associated with representing Ghana.
The left-back from Auxerre conveyed his disappointment, emphasizing that the players understand the high expectations placed on them to win every game. He stated, "This is not the way we intended to kick off the tournament. We have another match, and we have the opportunity to make ourselves proud."
Mensah added, "We play for a nation where there's an anticipation for us to emerge victorious in every game. We're entering the next match with the same level of pressure and determination." Ghana is set to face Egypt in their next group-stage encounter on Thursday, January 18.
